The project 'the Sound of Shopping' was presented in February 2008 at the art supermarket M-ARS. Once a customer has let his items be read at the cashier’s desk the barcodes of the individual products will be analyzed and transformed into music. The customer has now the opportunity to receive his personal “Sound of Shopping” as ring tone on his mobile phone via Bluetooth. The music file can equally be played onto a CD or on a USB-stick and will be published on the website www.soundofshopping.com for download.
In contrast to the project presented in the M-ARS art supermarket, the online version of 'the Sound of Shopping' transforms IP-address, birthday and other browser specific data into music.

Each 'Sound of Shopping' is unique and allows conclusions as to the purchase made.
The 'Sound of Shopping' converts numerical sequences by use of rules into music. These rules are arranged by different composers and can in each case be played with various instruments. Parameters like date, time of purchase, number of products bought can be integrated into the composition. The online version integrates the IP-adress, browser specific data and optional the birthday of the visitor into the composition process. Thus, no composition is like the other and each customer receives his very own 'Sound of Shopping'.
